Moderate Earthquake Jolts Southeastern Iran
The tremor struck at 8:36 a.m. local time (05:06 GMT) and originated at a depth of about 56.7 kilometers (35.2 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to buildings.
Iran lies within a highly seismic zone and has suffered several destructive earthquakes in recent years. The deadliest event in recent memory occurred in 2013, when a 6.7-magnitude quake devastated Bam, claiming at least 34,000 lives.
More recently, in July 2022, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Hormozgan province near the Persian Gulf coast, resulting in at least five fatalities and over 80 injuries.
