Iran Rejects US-Controlled Corridor Through Armenia
This reaction follows a recent agreement signed in Washington by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and US President Donald Trump.
The accord authorizes the establishment of the Zangezur transport corridor, a planned route connecting Azerbaijan’s mainland to its exclave, Nakhichevan.
The pathway would pass through a narrow southern Armenian region that borders Iran.
As part of the arrangement, the United States will supervise the corridor while maintaining Armenian territorial authority.
This will be implemented via a 99-year land lease, which will then be subleased to a private group responsible for building and managing the corridor's infrastructure.
Although Iranian officials have expressed approval of any peaceful resolution between Yerevan and Baku, they have "vehemently" rejected the notion of US oversight in the corridor’s administration.
Tehran argues that this foreign-controlled route would effectively isolate Iran from Armenia and introduce external military and economic forces into the South Caucasus, thereby disrupting the area's balance.
Ali Akbar Velayati, a prominent aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, described the corridor plan as a calculated geopolitical maneuver orchestrated by the US and Israel.
He claimed the initiative’s intent is to marginalize Iran, sever its northern links, and enforce a territorial blockade against both Iran and Russia.
According to him, the plan fits into a broader Western and NATO-endorsed agenda, in collaboration with pan-Turkic factions, designed to pivot Western strategic priorities from Ukraine to the Caucasus region.
