Macron Urges Swift US-Iran Deal, Immediate Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday renewed calls for a swift diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in line with international law and without preconditions.

In comments shared on social media, Macron revealed that he had held discussions with several regional leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

According to Macron, he conveyed a consistent message during each conversation, stressing the urgency of reaching an agreement between Washington and Tehran to help reduce tensions and restore stability.

He said the immediate priority should be securing a lasting ceasefire and ensuring the Strait of Hormuz is reopened unconditionally and in accordance with international law. Once those objectives are achieved, broader negotiations should continue to address additional issues, including Iran’s nuclear activities, ballistic missile program, and wider regional security concerns.

According to reports, Macron also stated that France is prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at protecting maritime navigation through the strategic waterway. He noted that Paris is ready to participate in a multinational initiative being jointly led with Britain to help safeguard commercial shipping and maintain freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
