Wang Yi Holds Talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi

On September 16, 2026, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi in Beijing.

Wang Yi stated that the current situation in the Middle East remains turbulent, seriously affecting international peace and development. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China is ready to play a constructive role in resolving international disputes. China and Iran are comprehensive strategic partners, and China is also ready to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Iran to safeguard Iran’s legitimate rights and interests. The continuation of the US-Iran conflict does not serve the common interests of the parties concerned or the international community. We encourage Iran and the United States to stay rational and restrained, return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as soon as possible, and, on the basis of the consensus reached so far, rebuild the negotiating mechanism and conduct substantive consultations on issues of respective concern. We support Iran in conducting dialogue with Gulf countries, respecting each other’s territorial sovereignty and national security, and upholding the common interests of the region in a constructive manner. We urge all parties to take effective measures to open the Strait of Hormuz at an early date, safeguard the unimpeded and safe passage of international waterways, and maintain the stability of international energy transportation and the production and supply chain. We do not want to see regional tensions further spill over toward Yemen and the Red Sea. We call on all parties to stop further complicating the situation and resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation.

Wang Yi noted that the current situation once again proves that the existing security architecture in the Middle East is imperfect and needs reform and strengthening. During his visit to Egypt, President Xi Jinping put forward a four-point proposal in this regard, supporting regional countries in upholding a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security and building a new security architecture for the Middle East. We welcome the useful exploration by regional countries in this regard. On the Middle East issue, China, as a responsible major country, will, as always, contribute to peace and stability, to the promotion of talks for peace, and to fairness and justice.

Wang Yi stated that China’s policy toward Iran maintains continuity and stability. China has always upheld fairness and justice on the Security Council and multilateral platforms, opposed the use of force, and safeguarded the norms governing international relations. China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Iran and promote new progress in China-Iran relations.

Seyyed Abbas Araghchi briefed on the latest situation in the Gulf and Middle East region and Iran’s considerations for the next step. He stated that Iran does not want the conflict to continue and hopes to return to the channel of diplomatic settlement, while firmly safeguarding its own rights and interests. Iran believes that the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding remains valid. Iran has reached a plan with Oman to open the Strait of Hormuz, and the United States should earnestly fulfill the commitments it has made. Iran is also ready to engage in dialogue and consultation with regional countries, establish and develop good-neighborly and friendly relations, and promote the early restoration of peace and tranquility in the region. Iran welcomes and supports the four-point proposition on maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East and the four-point proposal on promoting common security in the region put forward by President Xi Jinping, and is ready to strengthen cooperation with China within this framework, and looks forward to China playing a greater role in regional peace and stability.

Seyyed Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran attaches great importance to its relations with China and stands ready to continue firmly supporting each other with the Chinese side, maintain close exchanges at all levels, deepen practical cooperation, jointly address challenges, and promote the sustained and in-depth development of bilateral relations.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional hotspot issues of mutual concern.
