US Approves Qatar-Mediated Draft Agreement with Iran
The mediation team also presented the draft to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, both of which endorsed the proposal, the sources said.
Washington and Tehran have reportedly agreed to make concessions concerning Iran's nuclear activities and its frozen financial assets.
“Tehran will announce a concession on its nuclear program in return for Washington announcing the release of part of Iran’s frozen assets,” the sources said, explaining that both announcements would be issued simultaneously.
Negotiators are currently working out the details of coordinating the announcements, including the measures each side would initially undertake and the declaration of a temporary agreement intended to create conditions for further negotiations.
Regional tensions have remained elevated since the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with attacks targeting Israel and US-linked assets across the region, before the parties reached a ceasefire in April.
Earlier, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 concerning freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. However, disagreements over security arrangements in the strategic waterway prevented the agreement from being implemented.
